In the fall of 2014, an unexpected partnership formed between Kenner’s Roosevelt Middle School and Pierson Middle-High School, in Sag Harbor, New York. Katy Graves, the new superintendent of Sag Harbor Schools, reached out to Katy Clayton, a first year teacher at Roosevelt, who also happened to be a former student of Graves’s from Jefferson, New York. In talking about their respective years, Mrs. Graves and Ms. Clayton realized that their eighth graders might have a lot to offer each other. Along with Ms. Brittany Miaritis’s 8th Grade English classes, their team in New York organized a massive book drive, collecting nearly 2,000 books through donations to support Roosevelt Middle. In January 2015, a group of 50 Roosevelt 8th graders participated in a Skype call with Ms. Miaritis’s 8th grade students. Various student volunteers read information they had prepared about their different communities, schools, interests, and traditions. Through this exciting experience both groups were able to learn new things about their peers, put faces to the book collection, and realize how much they had in common despite the distance between their two worlds.
Because we at Roosevelt Middle are so grateful to Sag Harbor Schools and excited about this new-found partnership, we decided to extend the good-will to Mildred T. Harris Elementary, another Jefferson Parish school that has close ties to several of the Roosevelt faculty. By sharing this generous donation, the Roosevelt staff and students hope to create a mutually beneficial partnership focused on increasing student literacy. We are excited to process the new books to build classroom sets and enhance the school library.
